Andrea Dovizioso has officially joined the stables of Sidi champions. The Italian rider recently visited the Sidi headquarters in Maser (Treviso) Italy before taking off for the Malaysian circuit in Sepang, where he’ll face his first tests on his new official Yamaha supplied by Team Tech3. It was an occasion to meet the Sidi staff who’ll be following him closely on this new adventure, so Dovizioso could familiarize himself with the new Sidi Vortice boots he’ll be wearing for the 2012 World Championship series.

The Vemar Eclipse in Night Vision is painted with a proprietary paint formula that includes a phosphorescent pigment applied in three layers over a special base coat. The glow properties are activated by absorbing the UV radiation of sunlight and will glow in the dark for a maximum of eight hours. The effect is more intense for the first two or three hours, and then it gradually lessens until reactivated by UV rays. The glow properties won't wear out and will outlast the useable lifespan of the helmet.

The 2012 version of the Eclipse helmet has an improved visor gasket for better sealing and an all-new shield mechanism. The removable, washable cheekpads are molded from a proprietary material that maintain their shape longer and are anti-bacterial and moisture-wicking. The Eclipse has "Vemar Klima" adjustable, full-ventilation system with four intake vents on the top of the shell and two large exhaust vents in the rear. The helmet has a mid-oval shell shape and weighs around 1450 grams (3.19 pounds). It meets EC and DOT standards and comes with a five-year warranty. The Vemar Eclipse Night Vision Helmet is available in sizes small to XXL.

Gibson and TUF Racing keep the red plate in Wilkes-Barre.

They have had a lot of rain in Pennsylvania and usually this would have no effect on AX except the dirt wasn’t covered this year and the track was extremely soft. This led to some of the biggest ruts I have ever seen indoors and caused havoc to many of the riders. Jeff started off great on Friday night finishing second in his heat race. No one wanted to take to many chances in the heat races on the rutted track one small mistake and you were on the ground. Cole Siebler was back this weekend and was winning his heat race until a red flag caused a restart. Cole ended up 3rd in the restart and it was nice to have two riders in the front row for the main. The gate dropped on the main and both riders got good starts. Jeff rounded the first turn out front and Cole was in fourth. Someone got a little out of shape in the whoops and Cole was back in 9th after one lap. Jeff led the first 14 laps but Chad Johnson was right behind him and made the move on lap 15 with Jeff following him home in 2nd. Meanwhile Cole was having the ride of the night passing all the way up to third.

Saturday didn’t start as well for the FMF Power team as Jeff had some contact in the first turn in his heat race and could only get himself back up to 5th. While this was good enough to transfer to the main he was going to have to do it from the second row. Cole led his heat into the first turn also, but he also had trouble with some ruts and dropped back to 3rd. Cole dropped his back trying to pass for second and dropped all the way back to 9th. Cole had worked his way back into a qualifying position when he went down hard in the whoops and would have to sit out the rest of the night. We knew going into the main starting in the second row was going to be tough on this rutted track so we just wanted to salvage as many points as possible. Jeff came through the first turn around 9th or tenth and slowly picked off one rider at a time until he was in fourth.   He was just about to pass Skaggs for 3rd when Skaggs got cross rutted and Jeff ran into the back of him and went down. He got up and going again but he was back in 7th.   Jeff put his head down and slowly re-passed the riders he had just worked his way around. At this point in the race Gibson was the fastest rider on the track. He passed Skaggs back for fourth with 4 laps to go and set his site on Johnson in 3rd but just ran out of time by the checkers. This was a great ride by Jeff and with it he maintains his six point lead over Bowers going into the break.

2012 Vemar Attivo Flip-Up Helmet Preview:

Vemar will introduce the new "Attivo" flip-up helmet at the 2011 EICMA show. The Attivo will not replace the Vemar Jiano EVO TC Flip-up (preview) (full review in process) but will supplement the lineup as a lower-priced alternative. It will be sold in Europe and the U.S.A.

Accessories for both the Jiano EVO TC and the Attivo include the Vemar LED cheek pads with rechargeable battery and an integrated Bluetooth intercom communications system.

I handled the Attivo at the Vemar booth at EICMA; here is a video, some photos and the Vemar press release for the new Attivo. Hopefully, we'll have one for a review as soon as the helmet is ready!

2012 VEMAR Storm Preview:

Vemar introduced the new "Storm" full-face helmet at the 2011 EICMA show. The Storm is a new low-to-mid priced helmet and the samples on display appeared to have very high quality, with tight tolerances in the split lines and parts.

The Storm shell is a type of polycarbonate and the helmet will be available in sizes ranging from XS to XXL. It comes with a Pinlock-ready face shield in Europe and an anti-fog coated face shield in the U.S.

Both the European and North American face shields will be treated with an anti-scratch coating also. The Storm also has a "Microlock" chin strap retention system. Various tinted face shields, a Pinlock insert, cheek pads and other parts will be available as options.

The liner used in the Storm appeared to be comfortable and the helmet is nicely padded. The liner is removable and washable and it has an anti-microbial treatment.

One of the characteristics of the Storm is the availability of a range of colors and graphics in addition to solids. The colors were bright and vibrant and are very nicely suited to the overall design of the helmet. The "Diablo" graphics, with the large outlined five-pointed stars, look very nice, as so the other graphics.

We hope to have a Storm for a review in the near future and I'll be covering the 2012 Indianapolis Powersports Dealer Expo, where the Storm will be officially released in the U.S.

2012 VEMAR Helmets Overview:

Vemar had a lot to show at the show! In addition to the Vemar Storm (First Look) and the Vemar Attivo Flip-up (First Look), they had some late stage prototypes of their new "Black Technology" line of helmets on display.

Black Technology represents the highest level of Vemar Helmet design and manufacture. The sinister-sounding name refers to the carbon fiber used to make the shell for the helmets in this range.

Vemar has a great deal of experience with manufacturing products using carbon fiber and other materials; the company began by making various products for the wine-making and plumbing industries and they make polycarbonate and composite fiber-based protective helmets for auto racing, the military and firefighting sectors, among others.

The carbon fiber used in the Black Technology helmets looked beautiful on the samples that were on display at the show. The first helmets in this range will be a Black Technology version of the Vemar Eclipse (review) and the Vemar Chimaera, which U.S. owners know as the Vemar Jiano EVO TC (review).
Vemar had another Black Technology helmet on display; it is an off-road version with highly stylized features that are different from just about any other off-road helmet I've seen.

I have included photos below; this helmet is in prototype development and some of the moldings are actually made from a type of Selective Laser Sintering rapid prototyping machine. In fact, they had an entire helmet shell that had been produced this way and it can also be seen in the photos below.

Other news from Vemar includes a slightly revised Eclipse with some of the boldest-looking intake and exhaust vents I've seen in a while (photo below), along with the new Vemar Storm (First Look)helmet line and the Vemar Attivo Flip-up (First Look), both described in separate articles.

And don't forget the Vemar "Bluetooth Cheek Pad" system -- it's an entire Bluetooth communications system installed in a cheek pad, similar to the LED lighting cheek pad I described in the Vemar Jiano EVO TC review!

Sidi boots signs TUF Honda to Lead its Quest for Arenacross Gold!

Motonation is very pleased to announce that it has secured the services of TUF Honda, one of the most successful teams in AMA Arenacross Series history, to wear Sidi Crossfire boots for the 2012 championship campaign.

TUF Honda will boast a talented three-rider lineup for the 2012 AMA Arenacross Series. Former series champion Jeff Gibson, along with 2011 race winner Cole Siebler, return to the team, and will look to bring the title back to the TUF stable for the first time since the 2009 season. Additionally, TUF welcomes back up-and-comer Michael Lang, who is coming off a solid year in Arenacross Lites class competition.

From 2007 to 2009, there wasn’t a more successful team in the AMA Arenacross Series than TUF Honda. Three consecutive championships vaulted the team to juggernaut-like status, and while the premier-class title has fallen just out the team’s reach over the past two seasons, TUF Honda has been in the thick of the title fight.

Gibson is a true veteran of the AMA Arenacross Series. After making his return to competition with an exceptional title-run in 2009, Gibson has overcome adversity to return to top form, finishing runner-up in the championship last season, on the heels of three wins. Ironically, the series’ move to 250cc machines could work into Gibson’s favor. The last time such a rule was in place, it was Gibson who prevailed to take the championship, and he will look to rekindle that magic for the upcoming season.

After several years honing his ability on the larger tracks of Monster Energy Supercross, an FIM World Championship, Siebler joined the AMA Arenacross Series full time in 2010 with TUF Honda, and was one of the championship’s bright spots. He posted an underdog win, turning many heads within the industry, and while injury forced him to cut his season short, Siebler had established himself as a contender. With a return back to the TUF Honda team for 2012, he will be one of a handful of riders battling for the championship.

As one of the youngest riders in the AMA Arenacross Series, Lang continues to develop as a rider, and under the tutelage of Team Manager Dave Antolak, will surely be a contender for this season’s Arenacross Lites title. In 2011, Lang captured one heat-race win, posting six top-10 finishes en route to sixth in the Eastern Regional Championship. With experience under his belt, look for Lang to be a consistent challenger for podium results.

SIDI ENDURO WORLD CHAMPIONS WITH JUHA SALMINEN
It's the eighth career world title for the Finn rider

Sidi continues collecting important titles in the off-road sector. After success in motocross with Tony Cairoli, who has just won his fifth world championship title, now it's the Enduro field that is carrying Sidi to the top step of the podium, on top of the world in this specialty. On Saturday, October 1st, in the French Grand Prix in Mende, which marked the last 2011 World Title test, Finland's Juha Salminen once again latched on to his direct rival, Eero Remes, without letting up, for a completely Finnish final podium which saw Salminen on top of the E1 World Title standings in front of his fellow countrymen Remes and Seistola. This victory was built up, race after race, in yet another exceptional crowning season for the Finnish ace from team Husqvarna. Success was already in the air after the Andorra Grand Prix, the second-to-last test in the World series, but to be mathematically certain Salminen had to wait for the French trial, the final act in the World Championship title.

These are record numbers for Sidi and Salminen; in fact, with this victory the Finn rider has taken his total career world titles to eight, thus beating the record of seven titles he had been holding, together with another two great Enduro riders like Anders Eriksson and Kari Tiainen. And Juha Salminen seems to have no intention of stopping here...

Salminen was not the only one holding the Sidi colours high in the Enduro Championships. There's also Frenchman Christophe Nambotin, who took second place in the E3 class rankings at the end of a nice season which saw him in the race for the World Championship rainbow title. Unfortunately, Nambotin is still being healed up and he's not completely at 100% due to the recent fall he suffered in the final of the French Championship. However this placing has a special taste for Nambotin and for Sidi, because it was obtained on the back of another ace in the specialty like Finland's Mika Ahola, who earned his fifth career World Title in 2011.

Paul Whibley gets it done early.

FMF/AmPro Yamaha’s Paul Whibley got his wish when he wrapped up his fourth consecutive Parts Unlimited Off-Road Motorcycle and ATV Nationals Championship two rounds early.

Round eight of the series - the Rekluse Moonshine Cross-Country National – held near Erie, Illinois, on September 18, saw Whibley jet to the early lead when he started out by snaring the $200 FMF Holeshot Award. But with a light rain turning the course slick and trickier than it had been during practice on Saturday, he opted to ride relatively cautiously.

American Honda/GEICO Powersports/JG Off-road’s Scott Watkins and Obermeyer Yamaha’s Jordan Ashburn took advantage of that, as well as an unscheduled stop by Whibley. But Whibley regained his lost ground and re-passed for the lead just past the halfway mark, motoring to a 37-second margin of victory over Ashburn. Ashburn’s runner-up clinched second in the championship.

Watkins would hold on for third over teammate Rory Mead with K’s Motorsports-backed Adam Bonneur rounding out the top five.

Here at TrackdayMag.com, we’re devoted fans of Sidi boots.

Several of our Editors wear this Italian company’s Vortice or Vortice Air model and we’ve crash tested the design more than once. Aside from being superbly constructed and heavily armored, the Vortice’s standout feature is its complete adjustability. Ratchet assemblies, located at the instep, ankle and calf of each boot, allow the user to mold the Vortice to a custom fit. These boots receive our highest recommendation, due to the safety, comfort and style that they offer.

The one drawback to the Vortice line is that it is quite complicated to put on.

In our opinion, this is a small price to pay for the unrivalled fit and protection of these boots but for some consumers, it’s a deal breaker.

If a segment of potential customers won’t buy your product, you need to come up with another offering. Sidi has done this with their new ST line. The ST offers every bit of Sidi’s legendary style and protection in a package that’s far easier to put on and is less expensive, um... To boot! Needless to say, we had to give this newcomer a test.

First, let’s dispense with the rest of the boot world. Sidi’s Vortice and Vortice Air are the most protective and best fitting boots we’ve tried, period. How about the ST? Well, if the Vortice line weren’t so clearly in the lead, we’d have to say that the ST rivals anything else in the market. Fit, comfort, armor and style meet or exceed what you’d expect from a high-end racing boot offered by any other manufacturer.

The ST is available in standard or the highly perforated Air model, either of which sells for $395. That’s an honest hundred dollars less than the Vortice but also fifty-five bucks less than the Alpinestars Supertech R’s asking price of $449.95. We mention the Supertech R because among top-spec boots, this would be the ST’s nearest match as far as fit, features and ease of getting into or out of.

If the ST costs less that its Vortice sibling or the Alpinestars Supertech R, the obvious question is, What am I giving up?” Having ridden in all three, we have some opinions on that score.

As far as the Supertech R is concerned, what you’re giving up is $55 fewer dollars and the Alpinestars logo. When judged strictly as motorcycle footwear, the Sidi ST is every last bit the equal of the Supertech R and in many details, may actually be better.

The negative, at least for some, is the Sidi boot’s unmistakable lack of an Alpinestars logo. For comparison’s sake, think athletic shoes: Reebok or New Balance offer outstanding products and might win the Consumer Reports shoe comparison but there are those consumers who will only wear Nike.

If the size and quantity of banners alongside a MotoGP racetrack don’t guide your purchasing decisions, try on both the ST and the Supertech R boots to see which one impresses you more.

Look down at each pair of boots and think about the jabbing footpegs, spinning tires, whirring chain and gears, crushing blows from your bike’s frame and engine, rumble strips, ruts, pavement edges, etc, which you might encounter during a crash. At that point, price should become academic, especially if the pair you like better are the ones that cost less.

How about the ST versus Vortice family rivalry?

In our estimation, the $495 Sidi Vortice and Vortice Air models are the Gold Standard in racing boots. Sidi’s ST model costs 20% less. What are you giving up? To start, the ST loses the Vortice’s three ratchet adjusters and four latches in favor of a single pair of cam buckles at the calf. While the calf adjustment system on the ST works perfectly and is lightning fast to operate, there’s no question that the vastly more complicated Vortice system does a better job of custom-fitting the boot to your foot.

But, (And this is a BIG but…) some people choose not to buy the Vortice because of this complicated system. If you’re one of them, the cam buckle setup on the ST is an improvement, not a downgrade.   The ST does without such Vortice features as closable ram air vents in the toes, replaceable sole inserts and magnesium toe sliders. (The ST gets plastic sliders instead.)

Vortice DNA is readily apparent in the ST. Clearly, many parts are shared between these two boots, as are the high tech materials and construction techniques used to form their basic structure.   Going back through the years to their revolutionary Vertebra boot, Sidi’s claim to fame in motorcycle protective gear has been their torsional ankle protection and armored Achilles area. Impact-absorbing heel cups are also a part of the plan. All of this hardware is shared between the Vortice and ST, as is the composite, crush-resistant insole.   Protectively speaking, these boots are identical; which is to say that nothing we’ve yet tested will do a better job of keeping your fragile feet and ankles safe in a crash.

If you’ve arrived at the decision to buy Sidi boots, your bottom line comes down to two things:

1) Are you willing to hassle with the Vortice’s latch system in trade for the superior fit that it offers and

2) Do you have the extra $100 to spend? We have two seasons of experience with the Vortice and when we ride the ST, we feel like something is missing.

The problem is that we’ve become addicted to that custom Vortice fit and for us, an extra $100 and the additional struggle when putting the boots on is a fair tradeoff to get it. If you’d like to experience every bit of Sidi’s legendary protection with a C-note in savings, buy a pair of the ST boots. If you’ve never ridden in the Vortice model, you honestly won’t know what you’re missing. It is our opinion that if you manage to avoid destroying your set of Sidi boots and thus keep them for several seasons, then the magnesium toe sliders and replaceable soles of the Vortice model will extend the boot’s lifespan; additionally, if the Loicra shell of the boot stretches with time and use, the Vortice’s adjustment system will allow you to retailor the fit. These advantages could well justify the extra cost of the Vortice by allowing you to use it longer.

Good as the Vortice is, the ST makes sense to a lot of riders for a lot of reasons. If you’re a newcomer to the brand, are on a budget or are a Sidi enthusiast who sadly took a pass on the Vortice when it was introduced because it was just too hard to put on, the ST is the boot you’ve been wishing that the company would make. Consider it to be “Simply Sidi.”

SIDI SPORT CELEBRATES TONY CAIROLI’S FIFTH WORLD TITLE - Motocross MX1

Sidi is happily celebrating with immense satisfaction along with Tony Cairoli (Team Red Bull Teka KTM Factory Racing motocross) his 2011 World Title victory in the motocross MX1 class.

On Sunday, September 4th, in the European GP on the German circuit in Gaildorf, the Sicilian champion took home the fifth Championship Title of his career, with one race left to go until the end of the series. Cairoli only needed a few points to mathematically secure the title, but of course he raced in his own style, putting on a show and going all out to win.

Cairoli started out with an 82 point advantage over his closest rival in the standings, Frenchman Frossard. But regardless of this margin he certainly wasn’t playing it safe.

Cairoli was third in race1 and second in race2 after two amazing comebacks, which carried him to the win in the final standings in the Grand Prix and sealed his World Title.

By now the world rankings speak for themselves: Cairoli is first with 596 points, Frossard is second with 472 and Desalle comes in third with 461 points. Besides Cairoli, Sidi has another three riders in the World Championship Top 10: fourth-placed German Max Nagl, Portugal’s Rui Goncalves in sixth place and ninth-placed Jonathan Barragan from Spain. Next Sunday will be the final showcase, on the Fermo circuit for the Italian Grand Prix, which will be the last race in the 2011 World Title series.

Tony Cairoli keeps racking up record stats. Now he has captured 5 World Titles, two in MX2 in 2005 and 2007, and three consecutive titles in MX1 in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

For all these extraordinary victories Cairoli has been able to count on Sidi, which has supported him with commitment and passion. In this season the Sicilian rider has won 6 of the 14 Grand Prix races to now, with 5 second place finishes.

Altogether, he holds 43 championship victories (24 in MX2, the rookie series, and 19 in MX1, the master series in cross), with 88 heat victories in 123 Grand Prix competitions throughout his career. To give an idea of the value of Cairoli’s accomplishments, it’s enough to think that in the history of motocross there have only been two “legends”, like Stefan Everts, the king of motocross with 10 Championship Titles, and Joel Roberts, who have been able to win more.

And Sidi gets the satisfaction of also having been next to these two phenomena. Records were made to be broken and Cairoli certainly doesn’t seem to have any intention of stopping now...

The Vemar VRX7 is a good-looking, light weight and comfortable off-road helmet.
...the VRX7 performs surprisingly well as a street helmet and it's quieter than many full-face or dual-sport helmets.

The finish is one of those differences; off-road or motocross helmets are known for their loud colors and graphics and the VRX7 in this yellow, white and black high-contrast "Spinning" color is an eye-popper but in a good way.

However, the most significant difference -- and one that isn't obvious until you pick it up -- is the helmet's light weight. The VRX7 is made in Italy from a carbon fiber, aramid and fiberglass blend and it's among the lightest helmets we've ever put on the webBikeWorld scale.

The VRX7 is a North American helmet only (i.e., not sold in Europe). The shell is made in three sizes to cover an expanded head size range, so everyone should be able to find that perfect fit. But I'm getting ahead of myself here, so let's take a closer look...

Helmet Weight

The carbon-aramid-fiberglass shell construction of the VRX7 does seem to lower the weight and the helmet indeed feels light, which helps reduce rider stress.
In fact, the VRX7 is one of the lightest helmets we've ever weighed out of 171 helmets reviewed to date.

The VRX7 has definitely won me over; indeed, I'd rather wear this helmet than any of the dual-sport helmets I've tried...at least in hot, dry weather. Besides, it looks great on the DR650!

The VRX7 costs less than the rather outrageously priced Shoei off-road helmets and my feeling is that it's nearly equivalent. It costs more than many of the cheaper off-road helmets but you're also getting the five-year Vemar warranty and you're buying the light weight and solid shell.

CAIROLI AND SIDI CLOSER THAN EVER TO THE MX1 WORLD TITLE

For Tony Cairoli and Sidi the race towards the World Title in MX1 seems to have no obstacles. This would be the fifth World Title for Cairoli in his extraordinary career in motocross.

On Sunday, August 21st, in the Great Britain Grand Prix the champion from Sidi was back to winning. On the fast, spectacular circuit in Winchester, Cairoli clinched his fifth success of the season to gain precious points which launched him above the stratosphere of all the other riders in the championship standings. Cairoli put on a great show on the British circuit, standing out as the lead player with an exceptional performance. In fact, the Italian rider riding for KTM had two unfortunate starts, but fearlessly relying on his guts and class, he was able to make a fantastic comeback. In race1 he made it back into third position, and in race2 he even managed to make it to the highest step on the podium. These two important results carried him to victory on the day, ahead of Frenchmen Pourcel and Frossard, and more importantly added to his uncontested lead in the World Title rankings.

And it wasn’t just Cairoli; lots of Sidi stars are standing out as major players in this 2011 motocross season. In Great Britain in race1 in fact, Tanel Leok took fourth place, Max Nagl came in fifth and sixth place went to Rui Goncalves.

While in race2 Jonathan Barragan was fourth and Max Nagl fifth. Nagl, who’s in top form, came in just shy of the final podium, in fourth place in the Grand Prix overall standings. As always, Cairoli and the other Sidi aces had some serious help from their co-stars - that is, their Sidi Crossfire boots, the boots of champions and the number one in motocross.

Now it’s on to the Gaildorf circuit in Germany, for the European Grand Prix scheduled for next September 4th. It will be the second-to-last World Title test and for Cairoli to conquer the championship mathematically he’ll only have to come in eighteenth or garner eight more points. But of course, the super-champ will want to take on the race in his usual style… to win, have fun and put on a show.

On Sunday, August 7th, on the Loket circuit in the Czech Republic Grand Prix, Cairoli won race1 and then settled for second place in the final race for the Grand Prix win over his direct rival,
Clement Desalle. Little does it matter, because now, with just three races to wrap up the World Title, Cairoli leads the MX1 motocross standings with no less than a 48-point advantage over Belgium’s Desalle.

Sidi completed a day of celebration with Portuguese Rui Goncalves, third both in race1 and race2, which carried him to third place on the final podium for the Grand Prix; there was also Estonia’s Tanel Leok, who came in second in race2.

Cairoli just keeps adding record numbers to his portfolio, which already boasts four championship titles: two in MX2 (2005 and 2007) and two in MX1 (2009-2010). He’s already obtained 10 podiums in this season alone (4 victories, 5 second places and 1 third place). He’s won a total of 87 heats and 41 Grand Prix races in his career (24 in MX2 and 17 in MX1), which makes Cairoli the fourth most victorious rider of all time, a category led by another ace from the Sidi stables, motocross legend Stefan Everts.

In the Belgian Grand Prix that took place on Sunday, July 31st, on the circuit in Lommel, in Limburg, Cairoli literally dominated the race, winning both race1 and race2. Cairoli doubled down on his 2010 success, proving that he has a good relationship with this circuit. It’s a very technical tract made more treacherous by the sandy surface but this was no problem for the World Champion.

Sidi Sport is pleased as punch because in addition to Cairoli on the highest step of the podium, they could also celebrate a solid third place by Germany’s Maximilian Nagl, both riders members of the strong Red Bull Teka KTM Factory Racing Team. We were greeted with near perfect conditions at the Penton GNCC. A bonus at this event as in
the past it’s been either a dust bowl or a mud fest.

The Vortex Ignition and Works Connection hole shot device helped me pull a sweet start and I
led the first lap and set a comfortable pace as I learned the track. After scoring, Kailub Russell
passed me on the MX track and set off, trying to make a break for it.

On the second lap we ran through the Penton section for the first time. This was a 3 or 4 mile section of tight second gear trail that was fresh for our race. Just before we emerged from this section and back onto what had been used by the morning race, Kailub ran wide on a rocky turn allowing me to
retake the lead. I handed Kailub the lead back when I missed the turn for a line through a mud
hole. This was how the race would unfold for us both as we swapped positions throughout the
entire race.

I held the lead going into the last lap and wanted to open a gap before we got back to the MX
track as I felt Kailub was going a little faster than me on that section. Last time through the
Penton section and a bunch of riders were stuck on a hill, blocking the track. I tried to get
around them but got hung up in some rocks and roots.

Kailub got stuck right beside me. The guys who were blocking the track gave us a hand to get our bikes up and past them. Kailub got his up first and was gone. I pushed hard and caught back up to him and retook the lead. I kept the heat on only to have Kailub catch and pass me again only a couple miles from the finish. I charged as hard as I could and was right on his tail as we came out onto the MX track. I closed in on the last couple of corners and managed to double past him and hold the inside line leading into the finishing chicane to take the win.

Congrats to Kailub for his great effort. I think his maiden win is coming very soon.

Summary

The Vemar Eclipse has been revised for 2011 and it has Snell (2005) approval in addition to meeting DOT, ECE and BSI safety standards.

As the top-of-the-range Vemar helmet, the Eclipse has a host of interesting features, including a very comfortable liner, specially designed cheek pads and excellent ventilation.

The Eclipse was and is the "flagship" helmet in the Vemar lineup and, as such, it has all the bells and whistles one would expect.

Vemar may not be as well known to motorcyclists as some of the more familiar brands, but the company has always made some pretty interesting helmets and one of the nice things about it is that the helmets are all hand made in Italy.

The new Eclipse has several interesting features, some of which are different -- perhaps bordering on quirky -- but I will say that this has become my favorite helmet due to its combination of outstanding comfort, excellent ventilation and visibility and good looks (especially in this highly visible "Metha Red" graphic).

Score: I'll give the Vemar Eclipse an "Excellent" rating for quality, paint and graphics. The paint isn't perfect, with a few minor flaws and dust bumps showing on close inspection. But the solid feel of the helmet and the comfortable interior makes up for it. See the Summary Table at the bottom of the page for a description of our rating system

Score: I'll give the Vemar Eclipse an "Outstanding" rating for superior comfort and liner materials, padding and fit for my head shape

Score: I'll give the Eclipse an "Outstanding" rating for visibility but I will drop this to a "Very Good" rating for the operation and sealing of the face shield.

Score: I'll give the ventilation system of the Vemar Eclipse an "Excellenet" rating.

Score: I'll give the Vemar Eclipse a "Neutral" rating for its relatively heavy weight but with good overall balance.

Conclusion

The revised Vemar Eclipse has a few quirks, but not enough in my opinion to overwhelm its inherent goodness. This is one comfortable helmet and it fits me perfectly. I especially like the design of the cheek pads, which feel like they were custom-fitted to my cheeks. This helps reduce the feeling of the helmet's weight.

I also very much like the style and design of the Eclipse, especially in the Meth Red colors shown here. The bottom line is that the new Vemar Eclipse is my current favorite helmet and I can heartily recommend it to motorcyclists with a neutral or slightly narrow head shapes.

The champion from Sidi won the GP of Spain and the race for the World Title is on!

20 June, 2011 - On the Bañeza circuit in Spain, Tony Cairoli (KTM) is back on top. On Sunday, June 19, the Sicilian pilot from the Sidi Sport stables took second place in race1 and first place in race2 to clinch the Spanish Gran Prix in the final standings, ahead of the other Italian rider Philppaerts and Belgium's Desalle.

So once again, returning to support Cairoli on the highest step of the podium were his Sidi Crossfire boots, the number one footwear in the off road collection from Sidi, unbeatable on any terrain and in any weather. Rounding out a day's worth of success for the Sidi colours, Estonia's Tanel Leok took an excellent second place in race2, right on Cairoli's heels.

With this result Cairoli has reopened the field for the World Title, coming to within just one point difference from Clement Desalle, his closest rival in the race for the 2011 MX1 World Championship. Tony Cairoli was exceptional, as always, running an imperial race and overcoming the injury to his finger incurred last week in the Portuguese Gran Prix, which couldn't stop his drive to return to winning….

In fact, {the Vemar Jiano EVO TC is} a pretty good helmet, flip-front or otherwise.

I don’t test a lot of flip-front helmets. That’s because I personally don’t like them, and that means pretty much every one I do try out I’m going to give a poor review. I don’t like that they are heavy, awkwardly balanced and noisy.

I’ll wear flip-ups, so I can write intelligently about them, but I subject them to the same standards I expect from full-facers.

In fact, it’s a pretty good helmet, flip-front or otherwise. The outer shell (which comes in two different sizes to cover the 6 helmet sizes, XS-XXL) is a Kevlar/carbon/fiberglass composite, reshaped for better aerodynamics.

The Jiano TC is a stylish and well-made piece of gear. The finish is good and the fit, finish and attention to detail are noticeable. You won’t mistake it for a higher-priced helmet, but it’s also no cheapie.

My matte-black Jiano TC fit me pretty well. MotoNation calls it a “mid-oval” shape, and I felt some pressure on the crown of my head, but it broke in within 50 miles.

On the road, the Jiano TC didn’t really feel like a flip-up helmet to me. That’s because it’s the quietest and least drafty flip-front I can remember testing. No whistling noises, no breezes tickling my face. The visor seals well and is distortion-free (it’s claimed anti-fog, but it works as well as the other “anti-fog” faceshields I’ve tested). The internal sunscreen is good. It’s easy to deploy and retract and offers a variety of positions to even accommodate guys like my cousin David, who has a large (but very handsome) nose. The visor isn’t tinted enough to ride with directly into the sun, but it beats sunglasses—or having to carry an extra shield for when the sun goes down.

The battle for the 2011 motocross world title is on. On Sunday, June 5th, the French circuit at Saint Jean d’Angely hosted the fifth stage of the world title championship. The reigning MX1 class of French GP saw hometown idol Steven Frossard clinch victory as he managed to stay ahead of the phenomenon from the Sidi stable, Tony Cairoli. Even though he didn’t score a win, Cairoli, as always, put on a great show during the race, and he did himself proud on the dirt in France.

Summary
The new Sidi ST and ST Air boots provide high levels of protection with ease of use.

The entry and security system developed for the ST boots is easier to use for street or sport riding than the entry system found on the Sidi Vortice boots.

Sidi quality and features abound, and although the price may seem a bit steep, you can't put a price on safety.

Features of the Sidi ST Boots

There are several basic but necessary features that define a sport race style boot. These include reinforced soles, heel and toe protection, ankle protection and a tall upper to provide some shin protection.

Any boot in the Sidi lineup will give you that and you'll surely end up with something better than a pair of sneakers or work boots in terms of protection.

ST Secret Sauce

So the ST boots are pretty close to the no-compromises Vortice boots in terms of protection, but there's one big difference -- the ST boots have a new and very trick entry/latching/security system that makes them easier to use than the Vortice boots.

In fact, there's no reason at all why you can't use the ST boots on the street and be assured of near-race-like protection. Of course, there's nothing stopping you from wearing the Vortice boots either on the street either, other than the fussiness of the "Tecno VR" and "Tecno II" adjustable calf cinctures that were designed for pro racing.

Conclusion

While I've felt like there were a few compromises on some of the other Sidi boots we've reviewed, I'm really liking the Sidi ST boots.

They provide some of the best protection you'll find but they're still very easy to use (for this type of boot) on the street, unlike the Vortice boots that seem a bit too fussy for quick on/off street riding.

The styling is typically Sidi and I probably would prefer a black ST Air version, but either way, these are first-rate boots and it just doesn't get much better. If you can swing the cost, this is the boot to have.
